Western blotting is an analytical technique which are used to separate and detect individual proteins based on their relative molecular mass. Western blotting processors are equipment used to perform western blotting techniques with high sensitivity and specificity, allowing for the detection of desired proteins at concentrations approximately ten times lower than the detection threshold. The findings obtained with conventional western blotting processors are unreliable, time-consuming, and necessitate specialised competence, which is addressed by automated western blotting processors.

Western blot, also known as immunoblot, is a bio-analytical method used in laboratories to detect individual protein molecules in a complicated mixture of protein samples. The western blotting method is commonly used in cell and molecular biology to detect proteins of interest and quantify a gene product in gene expression investigations. This approach is also used to determine the size and quantity of protein expression. This method consists of three fundamental steps: size separation of protein molecules, transfer of proteins to the solid membrane, and visualisation of the desired protein using primary and secondary antibodies. Western blot methods have two major advantages: high sensitivity and specificity. Using this technology, a researcher can detect a desired protein at concentrations ten times lower than the detection limit. There are two types of Western blot processors: semi-automatic and completely automated. Because manual western blot processing is time-consuming and labor-intensive, there is a high need for automated western blot processors.
